Politics is the course for you if you enjoy discussing topical issues currently in the news. You will learn to critically analyse and evaluate British, American and Ideological politics. There will be an emphasis on developing your writing, reading and independent research skills.

Requires GCSEs in English language or English literature at grade 5, plus the standard entry requirements of an
A Level or mixed programme
You will learn about the nature and sources of the British Constitution, the structure and role of Parliament, the Prime Minister and Cabinet, the judiciary, devolution and the European Union.
You will also learn about the constitutional framework of US government, the US Congress, Senate and Supreme Court, democracy and participation, referendums, political parties, pressure groups and civil rights and you will study Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism and other ideologies.
At the end of this two year course you will sit three examinations that are all two hours long. You will be examined using a mixture of medium length and essay style exam questions.

Industry experience gained on the course: Guest speakers such as Lord N Kinnock and Kwasi Kwarteng MP talk to students about their political experiences and careers. Visits to Parliament and the Supreme Court aids the understanding and awareness of the variety of available political careers, nationally and internationally as well as witnessing what court life is like as a lawyer. Students attend Conferences such as at the Excel Centre, Victoria Docks to meet providers of apprenticeships and gain an understanding of different career paths. Students enter competitons such as the Guardian Foundation Hugo Young Award, which is a master class on journalism and an opportunity to shadow a journalist.
